Auch nach dem Tod ihres Anführers Cochise sorgen die Apachen weiterhin für Unruhe in Arizona. 1875 flieht der Chiricahua Apache Schwarzer Wolf zusammen mit einer Gruppe von Kriegern aus dem Reservat von San Carlos.
Aus Angst vor einem neuen Krieg schickt Fort Apache den Kurier Roy Clinton sofort nach Fort Bowie, um die Garnison dort zu warnen. Unterwegs findet er einen ausgebrannten Wagen mit der Leiche eines unbekannten Mannes darin.
Nachdem er den Mann begraben hat, wird ihm beinahe der Überfall durch zwei Apachen zum Verhängnis. Schwer verwundet erreicht er die Bentley Farm. Von diesem Augenblick an wird Clinton in eine äusserst delikate Angelegenheit verwickelt.
